Unique Cheese

We make a unique range of ethical and modern cheese on our property in East Takaka. Sourcing cow milk from the neighbours’ farm that uses sustainable organic methods, we use our own unique cultures to produce traditional cheese for the modern gut.

Our Products

Unfortunately we cannot offer shipping to the North Island until the new year, due to delays in the courier system. South Island orders can proceed as usual, though may require an additional day in some areas.

We create our delicious range of seasonal cheese using fresh milk, wild cultures and yeasts. We believe cheese is a reflection of its environment and ours is made with love.

Watched over by the great marble mountain Pikikirunga range in their tiny fromagerie in Golden Bay, Master cheesemakers Gabrielle and Alan’s handcrafted original recipe ‘Kervella cheese’ is alive in microflora, where rich and intricate flavours are born and matured.

With over 80 years of combined experience Alan and Gabrielle have well deserved international reputations; as artisan cheese makers, having trained and judged many others. They’re 1 of only 3 accredited RAW milk cheese producers in New Zealand!

Gabrielle, learning her craft in France, went on to adapt methods to Australian conditions. Banning fertilisers and chemicals on her farm and breeding her own goats she went on to become the top goats cheese maker in Australia with her own brand, Kervella Cheese winning the best overall Australian cheese award three times.

Alan, an engineer, dairy technologist and raw milk cheese consultant for 20 years in South Africa also with animal husbandry experience has worked with the process right the way through. He worked to design and build their bespoke and sustainable factory from scratch using home-made designs, some of which he has since patented.

“We’re always experimenting, all the time. We’re constantly evolving, constantly pushing the envelope, thinking “what can we do to make a difference?”
